When students go to history class they most likely are not excited to enter the classroom. History class is usually facts that have happened in the past that are important and the students need to know. It is not a class like Math where the students are learning to do addition or subtraction that will help them down the road. It is not like English class where they learn to read and write. Neither is it like Science class where there are labs and the students get to use their hands and blow things up.
Most History teachers just use and overhead and lecture the entire time and expect their students to memorize these facts. They want the students to know the presidents, when wars took place and what country is which on the map. These History teachers are missing the point completely. As a future educator in the History department I want to make History classes fun.
Students should be excited to walk into the classroom. Teachers need to change it up and not do the same boring lecture every time. Have a reenactment of the war so the students have a better understanding. Split them up into two different sides. Learning can not be boring or the students will not learn. Have a scavenger hunt to teach the students what it was like when the Americans came to the New World and how resources were very limited. They could also have the students read journals that are first person from people that were actually at the cite when it happened.
There is so much more History teachers can do than just give notes on an overhead and lecture. I want to change that when I begin my teaching career. Whether that be with activities or using technology I want to spice up my classroom so the students are excited about learning.
