This video is short but I have listened to this video multiple times since it was posted and it is so simple but so true when talking about leadership and taking care of your employees, students or players. To me wether you are running a business, school, classroom or team all of the traits he talks about comes in to play.
In this video he says that 40% of people working are happy in their job. Which is just an incredible statistic to me. He goes on to say that it is not about the perks and the money you spend on your employees to make them happy. It comes down to how are your employees treated? That's what is most important. You have to prepare your employees to take over their own school or team some day but treat them well enough that they don't want to leave.
When treating your employees well he talked about 3 key points. Trust and Respect. Fairness and Listening.
Trust and Respect. Do you trust your employees to allow them to make decisions on their own? I relate this to coaching and teaching. As a head coach and principal do you micromanage or do you trust your teachers and assistants? As a teacher I want my principals trusting me where I can teach in my classroom and not be looked up on at all times. The same as an assistant coach. You hired them to teach and coach kids. As a leader if you are constantly hovering over the people you hired they are going to question if they are doing a good job. You trusted them enough to hire them trust them enough to do their job.
This is when Michael Bush uses the quote "Do whatever is right when serving the customer." These teachers and coaches know how to work with kids and what to do on the field/classroom. Let them work their magic and get the job done. Trust is so important when working with your employees.
The next thing he talked about is fairness. Everybody wants to be treated equally. The age of an employee, tenure or rank should not matter when it comes to being fair. All employees are expected to work hard, show up on time, be nice to one another and do the right things. Nobody is above any of these expectations no matter how much money they make or how long they have been teaching or coaching. Everybody should be held accountable to the same standards. When you do this it helps your company grow in a positive light.
The 3rd key he talked about was listening. Listening is not just nodding your head or repeating what they said. Listening is being humble. You are constantly trying to improve yourself and how you do things. Be willing to search for the best idea possible. Your employees want to know if you considered their idea and what they said matters so much you might be willing to change your mind. This is so true and it happens in school and on a coaching staff. You constantly have assistant coaches, teachers and even students bringing ideas to you. As a leader it is imperative to listen to what they have to say. It might help you become a better leader or do something more efficiently. At the end of the day he talks about being willing to behave the right way, treat others properly, respond to what they say and support them. This is so true and so simple.
This video should be required of all leaders to watch in my opinion. Because all principals and head coaches were once teachers and assistant coaches. Their opinion matters and they are the ones running the inside operation everyday. We can't be a successful school or team without all of the pieces and parts. They have to feel valued. This video explains how you treat people and make them feel important. When people know you care about them and value their opinion they will be willing to do anything for you and the team. It boils down to relationships when running a successful school or team and this video preaches that. It promotes treating people the right way. I would highly recommend watching this video. You might be doing all of these thing that Mr Bush talks about but it will reaffirm that you are doing them and why they are important. This video was excellent. If you want to get the best out of your employees and have the best program possible watch this video. If you do these 3 things Trust and Respect, treat others with fairness and listen there is no doubt you will be successful. Your employees will be happy and the sky will be the limit when shooting for your goals as a leader.
