In the world of education today Inclusion is an every day thing. In my teaching schedule I have 6 classes and 5 of the 6 are inclusion classes. I think having inclusion classes are beneficial to teachers and helping us improve while working working with all of our students.
One of the first benefits of teaching an inclusion class that I can think of is working with another teacher. We are able to split our classroom up while doing a lot of different activities and lessons that I would not be able to do by myself. While having two teachers it is easier to walk around the room and work with all of the students. This way as a teacher you can build relationships and work with all of your students. It also allows the teachers to bounce ideas off each others heads and work together. The teachers can benefit from this. Two heads are better than one they always say and I truly believe that is the case here. By working together in the classroom setting both teachers are able to meet all the needs of the students.
The other benefit of Inclusion classroom settings allows the special education students to receive the support they need while staying in a general education classroom. Now they are able to stay with their classmates and friends. They are not going to a resource room with just a handful of kids. They are in the classroom with 15-20 other students but they have the support of their general ed teacher and their special education teacher. This is the best of both worlds. The student is getting support and help, the special education teacher is in the room so they see and hear everything that is taking place to help the student, the special ed teacher and general ed teacher are able to collaborate each day to discuss what is the best lesson for all students and the students are learning to work with students at all different levels. Inclusion is a great atmosphere for teachers and students to develop teamwork. It is a real world setting where not everybody is on the same skill level or has the same beliefs when you start working for a living but you have to be able to work together to solve problems and be successful.
I am also a strong believer in the fact that all students can benefit from inclusive learning. Students are learning to work with one another and at the same time they can learn from each other. These students all do things differently but I truly believe there are certain things they can take away from each other. We do classroom discussions in my class quite often with our bell ringers and everybody has different opinions. When they discuss their opinions it opens up their minds to a different way of thinking that they had not thought about before. Being in an inclusion classroom gives the students and the teachers this opportunity.
Having an inclusion classroom also forces the teacher to tailor the classroom for all learners. You will have kids that are audio, visual, and kinesthetic learners. You have students that learn at all different levels. As a teacher it is our responsibility to create the best lessons possible to reach our students so they have the best chance to learn. This is where differentiation comes into play. The really good teachers and ones that excel are able to bring differentiation into the classroom every day where they can challenger all of their students in different ways pushing them to be their best. This also makes the classroom fun where there are different lessons taking place in one class.
Having inclusion classes also makes differences less different. There are multiple learners in a classroom setting. These kids find that they have more in common with one another than they might have thought before. This goes a long way in helping these students build friendships. They are in a classroom setting working together being with each other more than they were before. Now they are not separated they are working together. It's a huge positive for everyone involved.
As stated earlier teaching inclusion classrooms also allows all students to receive support. Kids are no longer pulled out of their classrooms. They are in the same classroom setting with their peers and with their special ed teacher they are getting all the support and accommodations. Now these students are getting help from classmates and teachers. It is a very positive environment for all involved.
Lastly it creates an opportunity where there are high expectations for all. As educators it is our responsibility to push our students to become the best version of themselves and do the best they possibly can in the classroom. This forces our students to learn at the highest level possible. They are also learning how to work with all different types of people. They are listening to one another and hearing different ways to tackle questions and problems in class. Inclusion is such a better way to teach in the classroom. It is a huge benefit to the students and the teachers. It makes all of us better. Everybody benefits from this classroom setting. You can become more creative as a teacher with two teachers in the classroom. You can do more small group activities and you can build better relationships helping our students reach their full potential.
Personally I only see positives of inclusion classroom settings and I really enjoy having them. I have a great relationship with my teacher in my classroom and my students. We feed off of each other and learn from one another. I wouldn't change it at all. I love the way my classroom is set up. They are learning from me and I am learning from them. It has been a blast! I would highly encourage you to look into inclusion classroom settings if you do not have them already. The possibilities are endless for you and your students! It creates the best learning scenario possible! The kids will benefit and make the classroom more fun.
